Silver Spring, Maryland

The town of Silver Spring is located in Montgomery County, Maryland.  Just inside the beltway, it is the third most populous area in the state of Maryland.  Founded in 1840 by Francis Preston Blair, it gets its name from a mica-flecked spring that flowed through the south side of town.  Downtown Silver Spring is the most urbanized part of the town and in the past seven years, has undergone a major revamping, with the addition of new restaurants, entertainment, new homes for sale, new condos for sale and major shopping venues. It has even become a major business hub, boasting the location of Discovery Communications world headquarters.  Many people have revamped some of the old townhouses in Silver Spring, and many of them are now contemporary townhouses for sale to the public for around $450,000.

History

The Blair and Lee families are entirely responsible for the founding of Silver Spring.  Francis Preston Blair, who was very active in politics at the time, found a spring infused with flecks of mica one day, while horseback riding with his daughter.  He was so captivated by the spring’s beauty, he decided to build his house near it and named it Silver Spring.

    Today, Silver Spring is one of the most heavily populated and modernized cities in Montgomery County, Maryland.

The new developments in downtown Silver Spring bring many job opportunities with them.  Restaurants, shops, health cubs, and office buildings have provided not only service and convenience to the residents, but income as well.  
The Discovery Building, home of the world headquarters for Discovery Communications with its hundreds of employees, is one of the biggest employers in Silver Spring.  The Discovery Building is not the only office building in Silver Spring, however.  The World Building, on Georgia Ave., houses the radio stations WGAY and WRC.   The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on West Highway, The Montgomery Center on Fenton St., Station Square – The Atrium on Wayne Ave., and the Silver Spring Center on Colesville Rd. are among the many commercial buildings in Silver Spring.

    Residents that don’t work in Silver Spring will love the convenience of the Silver Spring Metro Station.  Located right in downtown Silver Spring, it is easy to catch the metro train, Marc train, or metrobus to anywhere in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area.


Shopping in Silver Spring

Silver Spring has become a hub for shopping.  Whether its new shoes, clothes, furniture, or food you are looking for, you’ll find it in Silver Spring.  With something for everyone, stores like Men’s Warehouse, Ann Taylor Loft, Office Depot, DSW shoes, and Pier 1 Imports are visited often.  Borders Books and Music, Ulta Salon, Strosniders Hardware, MyEyeDr., and Whole Foods Market make Silver Spring your one stop shop.    

Dinning in Silver Spring

    No matter what you have a craving for, Silver Spring has got it.  Classic American restaurants include Jackie’s, Austin Grill, Eggspectation, and Red Lobster.  Ethnic cusine is really the name of the game in Silver Spring though, with everything from Caribbean and Middle Eastern to Indian and Italian food.  If its African cuisine you desire, check out Langano Ethiopian Restaurant.  For Asian cuisine there’s Asian Bistro, Beijing Delight, or Mandaly restaurants.  For those times when you feel like having some Caribbean flavor try Negril Restaurant on Thayer Ave.

    Many of the restaurants provide outside seating in the main courtyard, weather providing.  There is also a fountain that runs during the summer months, where children can play and cool off.  


Silver Spring Neighborhoods

Indian Spring Neighborhood:
 
Indian Spring – built around the Old Indian Spring Country Club in the 1930’s, the homes and town houses in this neighborhood were meant to be country club houses.  In the mid 1950’s, the club moved to it’s current location on Layhill Rd., in Silver Spring, MD.  The neighborhood kept it’s original name.  Located just inside the beltway, off of Colesville Rd., in Silver Spring, the YMCA is the main attraction to the neighborhood.  The Indian Spring neighborhood is filled with mostly new, young families living in everything from homes, town houses and condos.  It’s convenience to the beltway and Washington, D.C. is a major appeal to the neighborhood.  There are many different types of homes for sale in Indian Spring, Colonial, Rambler homes and well as contemporary and Cape Cod type of homes. 

Indian Spring is a very friendly, family oriented neighborhood.  Centered around the YMCA and Indian Spring Rec. Center , families spend time at the many different playgrounds, baseball and soccer fields, indoor and outdoor pools, and basketball courts.  Driving through the neighborhood, you can see families playing out in their yards, having barbeques in the summer, and making snowmen together in the winter.  There are many neighborhood wide events as well.  Block parties go on throughout the summer, there is a yearly neighborhood yard sale, and the YMCA throws a neighborhood appreciation party every summer, complete with moon bounce and barbeque buffet.  Neighbors stay in touch and keep up with the neighborhood news on the Indian Spring Message Board.  Convenient to the beltway, Washington DC, and downtown Silver Spring, the Indian Spring Neighborhood is perfect for the family that wants to be in the middle of everything!

Aspen Hill – The area of Aspen Hill is small but densely populated.  It got its name from the aspen trees that grew near the first post office in that area.  There are no official boundaries for Aspen Hill in Silver Spring, MD, but the intersections of Georgia Ave., Connecticut Ave., and Aspen Hill Rd. defines the neighborhood.  There are approximately 60,000 people living in Aspen Hill and about 16,000 families residing in the area.  The estimated median house/condo / town home value is around 450,000 dollars.  There are currently only 17 active Homes For Sale in Aspen Hill; everything from Contemporary town houses and homes to traditional homes and colonial single family homes.  There are also many Condos For Sale in Aspen Hill.
